Election of Candidates to Membership
The Board of Trustees shall have the power to make and from time to time vary Regulations for the examination of those wishing to be admitted as Associates, Members or Fellows; or to delegate such functions to a Committee. The Board of Trustees may appoint persons, whether members of the Institute or otherwise, to be examiners for such purposes.
- The election of candidates shall be vested in the Board of Trustees, and shall be at its sole discretion. The membership application process shall be as prescribed time to time.
- Upon election the new member shall be notified in writing accordingly. Should a candidate be refused election to membership, the applicant will be so informed in writing, together with the reasons for his refusal.
- Upon election the member shall be entitled to receive and hold a membership certificate as long as he is a member. The certificate shall remain the property of the Institute and shall be returned on cessation of membership.
- the members of the Institute shall consist of three classes of members, namely, Associates, Members and Fellows.

Membership level
Experience required
6 Months Associate
Six-months’ experience in dispute avoidance or dispute management. Reference required.
5 Years Member
Five-years’ experience in arbitration, construction adjudication or mediation in a lead/sole capacity; including settlement agreements, the management of proceedings, and attending hearings which have resulted in the publication of a reasoned award or decision.
10 Years Fellow
10-years’ experience in arbitration, construction adjudication, or mediation in a lead/sole capacity; including settlement agreements, the management of proceedings, and attending hearings which have resulted in the publication of a reasoned award or decision.
A knowledge of law of obligations and evidence at first-degree level or recognised equivalent, or an understanding of law relevant to your mediation practice or recognised equivalent.
Experience of writing directions and final, reasoned awards or decisions/experience writing mediation agreements, heads of agreements, or memorandums of understanding.

Qualifications required
One of CIArb’s / CiADR’s introductory courses or an equivalent qualification from a recognised course provider.
- Complete Module 1 training and assessment components on one of CIArb’s / CiADR’s Pathways.
- Completion of CIArb’s / CiADR’s Accelerated Route to Membership (ARM) Programme.
- Completion of an equivalent course from a recognised course provider.
- Successful completion of Module 2 and Module 3 on one of CIArb’s/ CiADR’s Pathways.
- Successful completion of an Accelerated Route to Fellowship Course
- Completion of an equivalent course from a recognised course provider.
- Successful completion of CIArb’s Diploma, Part 3.
